Ndidi very important to Leicester — Maresca

By Daily Sports Nigeria on August 17, 2023

Leicester City coach, Enzo Maresca, has stated that Wilfred Ndidi remains an important player in the Foxes squad despite the arrival of Chelsea youngster Cesare Casadei on loan.

Casadei’s arrival at the club has further put Ndidi’s chances of playing regularly in doubt as the Foxes now have seven options for the three positions in the heart of the team’s midfield.

The Italian midfielder joined the Foxes on a one-year loan deal on the back of an impressive pre-season campaign with Chelsea and an outstanding U-20 World Cup showing, where he was named the best player and Golden Boot winner after leading Italy to second place.

Since the start of the Foxes campaign in the English Championship, the 26-year-old has made three appearances (two in the English Championship and one in the Carabao Cup) across all competitions, scoring once.

And despite playing 154 minutes from a possible 270 minutes, Maresca admits that he is keen to keep the Nigerian midfielder, who is evolving into a box-to-box midfielder.

Known for his prowess as a tough-tackling midfielder, Ndidi has been deployed as a No.8 under Maresca and even played as an attacking midfielder in the Foxes’ Carabao Cup win over Burton, where he scored a goal in the 2-0 victory.

“Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is one of the most important players, for sure. But for me, Wilfred is very important,” Maresca told Leicester City Mercury.

“He’s trying to do something that he never has before, to arrive in the box and to try to be an offensive midfielder. He’s doing very well at that.”

It remains to be seen if Ndidi who has been at the King Power Stadium since 2017 will remain at the club with one year left on his current deal.

He has since been linked with a move to Fenerbahce.
