Peseiro set for 10th Eagles game

By Daily Sports Nigeria on September 6, 2023

Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against São Tomé and Príncipe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo will be Jose Peseiro’s 10th game as Super Eagles head coach, over a year after he took charge of the team, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Portuguese tactician took up his role as the Eagles coach following his resignation as Venezuela manager in 2021.

The Nigeria Football Federation announced the appointment of Peseiro as the new coach of the Super Eagles May 15, 2022, replacing Austin Eguavoen, who returned to his Technical Director role at the federation.

Since his first game against Mexico in an international friendly at the AT&T Stadium May 29, 2022, the 67-year-old had made other eight appearances, five Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and three friendlies.

Under the tutelage of the Portuguese, the Eagles have churned out underwhelming performances and have only won four of their nine games under the watch of the 67-year-old manager, losing the remaining five, with the side scoring 18 goals and conceding 13.

It was also under Peseiro that the three times African champions recorded their worst run in 42 years as they lost three consecutive games, including a shock 1-0 defeat to minnows and 118th-ranked Guinea-Bissau in Abuja last March in a 2023 AFCON qualifier.

Ahead of the final AFCON qualifier game, Peseiro signed a new contract extension to remain in charge of the Eagles after agreeing to take a pay cut. He will however hope to start his new reign with a win over the minnows whom they already defeated 10-0 on June 13, 2022 on matchday 2 of the qualifying series.
