NPFL: Sporting, 3SC share spoils, Lobi go top

By Daily Sports Nigeria on January 16, 2024

There was nothing to separate Sporting Lagos and 3SC on Monday as they played out a 2-2 draw in their first southwest derby at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos in a match-day 18 Nigeria Premier League game, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Both teams faced off on the back of an unimpressive run of results and the pressure to end the game with three points saw the hosts finish the game with 10 men after Vincent Akpipi was sent off for dissent.

The game started off slowly, taking 41 minutes before Sporting broke the deadlock through Chinedu Ufere.

A tense stoppage time in the first half produced two goals, first it was 3SC who levelled matters through Kareem Ademola but Jonathan Alukwu restored Sporting’s lead from the spot before halftime after Monday Odibo was hacked inside the area.

The hosts’ 2-1 lead only lasted five minutes into the restart, allowing Gideon Monday restore parity for the visitors.

Following the draw, 3SC are 11th in the table with 23 points after 17 matches, while Sporting are temporarily out of the relegation zone, sitting 16th in the table with 18 points after 17 matches.

In another match-day 18 games decided on Monday, relegation-threatened Bayelsa United won their fourth game of the season, thanks to a 2-0 win over seventh-place Bendel Insurance.

Elsewhere in Lafia, Lobi Stars were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Kano Pillars, but a point was enough for them to move above Remo Stars to the top of the table after the Ikenne side were beaten 2-0 by Katsina United at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, Katsina.

Lobi hold a one point lead at the top of the table with 33 points, followed by Remo on 32 points, while Plateau United and Doma United are third and fourth respectively with 31 points each.
