Amusan, Ofili clash in US tourney today

By Daily Sports Nigeria on April 12, 2024

World record holder in women’s 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, will be up against  compatriot Favour Ofili in the 100m event at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational hosted by the University of Florida on Friday (today), The PUNCH reports.

It’s the first time that the duo would be racing against each other in the world circuit.

Ofili, a 2022 Commonwealth silver medallist in the 200m, will aim to qualify for the Olympics through the Tom Jones meet.

She recently shattered the national and African record in the women’s 300m at the 2024 New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston with a time of 35.99secs to become the 10th fastest woman ever over the distance.

The 21-year-old finished second behind Gabrielle Thomas, who won the race with a time of 35.75secs, while American Lynna Irby-Jackson placed third in 36.05secs.

Despite her feat this year, Ofili faces a tough test in beating reigning three-time African Games champion Amusan, who has vastly improved this year.

In the indoor season, the 26-year-old broke the African record in the 60m hurdles twice and effortlessly anchored the Nigerian 4x100m relay team to the gold medal at the recent African Games in Ghana.

Amusan will be gunning to surpass her personal best of 11.10secs and outrun her younger compatriot – making room for an exciting race to anticipate.

However, both sprinters will be aware of a quality field of world-renowned sprinters in the line-up.

Top on the list are world championships finalist Tamari Davis and her compatriot Melissa Jefferson, who’s a former US champion, Jamaican duo Alana Reid and Kemba Nelson and Abby Steiner.

Others are Imani Lansiquot, Masai Russell, Gina Luckenkemper, Talitha Diggs, Nia Ali, Quanesha Burks and Maia McCoy.
