Arsenal keep UEFA Champions League hope alive, Chelsea record biggest win of the season

By Nelson Dafe on November 25, 2015

Arsenal of England last night claimed all three points as well as recording three goals in their penultimate Group F match of the EUFA Champions League, beating visiting Dinamo Zagreb at the Emirates Stadium in London.

Arsenal’s hopes of qualifying from the group where they still lie third received a further boost as Bayern Munich pummelled Olympiakos of Greece in Munich 4-0.

Alexis Sanchez was involved in all three goals as Arsenal kept their hopes of Champions League

progression alive with a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Having provided the assist for Mesut Ozil to open the scoring after 29 minutes, Sanchez found the net either side of half-time to wrap up a vital win for the Gunners.

With just one Group F win to their name prior to Tuesday’s tie, Arsene Wenger’s side needed three points on their home turf to stand any chance of reaching the last 16.

After dominating possession without threatening early on, they eventually opened the scoring when Ozil capped a well-worked attacking move, netting from the side’s first shot on target of the game.

Sanchez doubled the advantage 12 minutes from the interval, before rounding goalkeeper Eduardo to complete the scoring in the 69th minute.

The result leaves Arsenal needing a two-goal victory at second-placed Olympiacos to guarantee progression in a fortnight.

In Tel Aviv Israel, Chelsea were unconvincing in their 4-0 win against hosts Macabi Haifa. The home side were reduced to 10 men late in the first half when ex-Chelsea man Tal Ben Haim was red carded for a blatant kick on striker Diego Costa.

Gary Cahill poked home the opener after his initial header was saved. Willian added a second from a free-kick, before headers from Oscar and Kurt Zouma wrapped up the win.

Dynamo Kiev’s win against Porto means Chelsea need a point in their final group game to reach the last 16.

The Blues, level on 10 points with Porto and two ahead of Dynamo Kiev, host the Portuguese side at Stamford Bridge on December 9.
