Salisu Yusuf’s Return from Corruption Suspension: NFF’s Hands Tied?

By Daily Sports on September 16, 2019

Let me present my unreserved apology to the very numerous readers of this news medium and by extension this column on its unavoidable absence last week Monday. It was so encouraging when our dear ardent reader, Adeleye Oyeleke, from Abuja noted that he accessed Daily Sports; saw other stories but this column that runs under the banner SPORTS PULSE was missing.

By the middle of last week, Salisu Yusuf, the chief coach of the Super Eagles who took bribe from agents of certain players to allow them into the U-23 Eagles is back to his duty post and warmly received by the NFF.

The rot in Nigeria as par corruption remains endemic but my anger runs to high heaven when Buhari and his cohorts keep making a mockery of that ten letter word.  Yusuf took bribe and this government claims it is fighting corruption, and Salisu Yusuf was caught red-handed, yet he has been breathing fresh air whereas he ought to be cooling his heels in prison or detention for corruption.

It never came as surprise though but what is annoying is that this deceitful Buhari APC regime, keeps disturbing the eardrum of the very long-suffering Nigerian masses with corruption mantra when in every true sense of it, the government looks the other side when the real thief is caught.

When the government kept mute, even when Yusuf confessed to the act, it meant his misdemeanour has the official stamp of the present regime. He was told to step aside, to allow tension cool off for one year, so he would come back and pick his job and that was exactly what came to the fore last week. Dirty Salisu Yusuf was hailed back to his duty post in NFF and he is there to continue taking bribe from where he stopped. I am simply scandalised and that is my view. If a corrupt public official should be treated as a hero, after openly admitting that he took bribe from players’ agents to make space for the concerned boys in the U-23 Eagles side, without any prejudice or ado, it leaves soured taste in the mouth.

In a sane society, Salisu Yusuf would have paid dearly for that his betrayal of trust and unprofessional behaviour. It won’t be an overstatement to say that Salisu Yusuf‘s dishonesty has once again played up the hypocrisy of this shameless country and her pretending leadership, before the civilised world that is still in shock, that a so called Buhari government that says it is fighting corruption, would close its eyes on this obvious treachery and still let Yusuf keep his job.

My question is, with this shameless display of betrayal to its own beleaguered citizenry, what else will the spokespersons of this government, that talk on the drop of a hat, say next about corruption. This Buhari/APC gang is truly reaffirming that talk is cheap if this obvious case of corruption by Salisu Yusuf has been swept under the carpet.

When the news broke last year, this columnist headlined it Salisu Yusuf admits taking bribe from players, Where is ICPC, EFCC? Nothing has happened to him; sadly he was let off the hook, thereby confirming that nothing other than blowing out of proportion, mere allegation and hearsay, beer parlour, silly and idle talks, on perceived enemies, as the very pastime of this criminal  gangsters and lying group of people that are just out  to rub mud on opponents.

I am still at a loss where this one-sided and selective punishment of certain individuals will lead us to, while real thieves are left to walk freely, enjoying their loot. If it involves certain people, they must go in for it while it is not so when even an obvious allegation is levelled against sacred cows? Salisu Yusuf must be clearly prosecuted for his misdeeds. He ought to be relieved of his national assignment. That is simply equity, as leaving him to go free just like that smacks of irresponsibility on the part of the federal government and the leadership of the NFF.

Yusuf is a confirmed thief and must be treated same, otherwise, it would be another signal that Nigeria remains a country that learns nothing and forgets nothing. If Buhari and APC are ready to prove their critics wrong, that the government is fighting corruption, not as mere propaganda and cheap political point, the NFF leadership must be ordered to bring Yusuf to justice.

Let me leave it at that, as it is open and well-known also that Salisu Yusuf is a shameless man without respect for himself and also one whose image is terrible. Follow me up on our social media handles. As usual, let us further discuss this shame of Salisu Yusuf, who ought to resign but came back to continue his field day. Let us keep our fingers crossed, not that anything would happen but to place it in history, the way and manner our ‘Clean Buhari’ is handling corruption cases. Keep shooting hard till next week!!
