Expert Blames Poor Sports Performance On Low Quality Food

The disjointed feeding pattern and low quality of food been consumed by active sports persons is responsible for their poor performance, Dr Dije Sule Kabara, has revealed.

According to the university don and nutrition expert,  Dije said knowing the mixture of types of foods that should be fed on  athletes prior, during and  after  competitions is a sure bet to improving the performance of athletes.

Dije cautioned that, when athletes are fed with the wrong ratio of calories, it hinders their performance, rise to their peak and retard the span of their active years in sports.

Dije speaking at a one-day training workshop recently organised by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Kano State Chapter, for Kano coaches held at the Conference Hall of Kano State Sports Commission (KSSC). He urged sports coaches to master the technique of monitoring and supervising the feeding pattern of their athletes.

According to her, implementing the obvious feeding pattern could be expensive, but urged Nigerian coaches and sports managers to seek knowledge that would aid them to improvise cheaper ways of feeding their athletes using locally available food items.

She pledged to aid people in the sports industry in need of technical knowledge on how to utilise food nutrition to better the lots of their athletes.

Earlier in his opening remarks, Chairman, SWAN, Kano, Rilwan Idris Malikawa Garu, appealed to coaches to enhance the industry through the quest for scientific knowledge.

He said that the changes in sports coaching is moving rapidly, cautioning that, if coaches are left behind in acquisition of recent know how in all  branches of sports, Kano would be left behind, adding that this is the sole reason behind the decision by SWAN to organise a seminar on nutrition, for Kano coaches.
