Members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Anambra State Chapter, over the weekend underwent a training on golf reporting.

The one-day training which was initiated by the State Chairman, Tony Oji, was organised by Ibori Golf club, Asaba, Delta State.

The training conducted by golfer Peter Adikpe taught sports writers the technicalities, etiquette and rudiments of playing the game, mostly viewed as a game for the wealthy class.

Taking sports writers round the golf course, Adikpe explained that the game of golf is divided into three categories, beginner, standard and professional.

According to him, a golf game which begins with a tee off along the free way  with yellow, green, blue and red markers as guide, takes approximately four and half hours to complete.

He explained that contrary to the general notion that golf is a game only for the rich, belonging to the club is open to any person with passion for the game.

Adikpe who has played golf for about 15 years said that unlike other games, golfing requires absolute concentration while playing, hence the reason why the golf course always have a serene outlook.

He added: “Golf can’t be played in a noisy environment because it requires absolute concentration, that’s why the golf course is always quiet while golfers are playing.

“As a golfer, you are expected to dress responsibly in chinos trousers and collar T-shirt tucked in with good canvas or shoe, nor just any kind of foot wear.”

In a chat with sports writers, the outgone captain of the club, Alfred Ebeneyi, said the club is working on creating more awareness of the game through a youth development programme.

He expressed delight that apart from the men, there are few women in the club that play the game satisfactorily as well as some young boys around.
