Benin agog as national trials begin

By Daily Sports Nigeria on July 5, 2023

Despite the downpour in Benin City on Tuesday, athletics lovers swarmed the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium to catch a glimpse of world champion, Tobi Amusan, World Championships silver medalist, Ese Brume and other overseas-based athletes train ahead of the National Trials, which begins Wednesday (today).

The event, which ends July 7, will be used to select Team Nigeria for the 19th World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

The arrival of Amusan, Brume and Udodi Onwuzurike took the number of the athletes based abroad to 16 on Tuesday.

Amusan, who won the 100m women’s hurdles at the Diamond League in Sweden on Sunday night, arrived in Benin City at about 11am on Tuesday, but the heavy rains delayed her appearance at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

At about 4pm, the athletes took to the tracks and field of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, with the fans in their hundreds applauding from the stands.

Over 160 athletes, including the home-based, will be on parade at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium for the National Trials.
