Troost-Ekong resumes training today

By Daily Sports Nigeria on January 24, 2024

Super Eagles assistant captain, William Troost-Ekong, is set to resume training today as the defender allays fears that the injury picked up on Monday could rule him out of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, The PUNCH  reports.

Troost-Ekong featured in the Eagles’ two opening group games against Equatorial Guinea and Ivory Coast and even scored the only goal against the hosts as he converted the penalty awarded to Nigeria after Victor Osimhen was fouled in the opponents’ area.

However, a few hours before the game against Guinea-Bissau, Troost-Ekong was ruled out of the encounter with pictures on social media displaying ice strapped to the defender’s knee.

Several media outlets (The PUNCH not included) reported that the former Watford man would miss Nigeria’s remaining games at the AFCON, but the 30-year-old central defender in an interview with journalists after the Eagles game on Monday quashed the reports adding that he would return to training on Wednesday.

“Do I look like I am out of the tournament,” Troost-Ekong said in a video posted by Oga Nla Media on X.

“I’m not out of the tournament; I’m getting better, I am looking to return to training the day after next (Wednesday).”

The news comes good one for Jose Peseiro, who hopes to have one of his most experienced defenders available for their next game against Cameroon in the round of 16 on Saturday.
