Athletics: Consider eyes African Games gold

By Daily Sports Nigeria on February 24, 2024

National 200m champion, Ekanem Consider says his next target is to win gold medal at the 13th African Games in Accra, Ghana.

Consider Ekanem won gold medal in the 200m men’s final with a time of 20.60secs at the 2024 MTNChamps/AFN National Trials in Delta state, setting a new Personal Best in the 200m with a time of 20.43secs (+1.1) in the heats.

He raced to a world-leading time of 10.10secs in his first 100m race of the season at the Dynamic Athletics Outdoor Meet 2024 held in Lagos last January; the time remains the fastest time run in the men’s 100m this year.

In an interview monitored by our correspondent, Consider said his target is to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

He said, “I am happy with my performances since the year began and my target is to qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris. Before the Olympic Games, I want to win a gold medal at the 13th African Games in Ghana. When I come back from Ghana, I will decorate the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu with my medal.

Reacting to his disqualification in the 100m men’s final, Ekanem said, “I wept profusely after the incident of the 100m happened but my coach kept on encouraging me. He told me that I could still make a huge difference in the 200m final. I am happy I was able to break my coach’s 200m record at the AFN National trials. If I had run my 100m final race, my intention was to run 9.90secs.

“Let me use this opportunity to dedicate all my wins to my coach, my family and friends who always encourage me whenever I train or attend national championships”, he added.
