Yellow Greens bounce back against Namibia

By Daily Sports Nigeria on March 19, 2024

Nigeria secured their first win in the men’s cricket event of the ongoing African Games in Ghana in their second game on Monday with a three-wicket win over Namibia at the Achimota Cricket Oval, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

It was a much-needed win for the Yellow Greens, who had lost their opening game of the event by 47 runs against Tanzania on Sunday.

The sequence of the win is also similar to their bronze medal-winning female counterparts who also beat Namibia women in their second game during the women’s event, which ended last week.

Namibia batted in the first innings and posted 121 runs for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs, leaving Nigeria with the target of 122 runs in the second innings.

Player of The Match, Isaac Danladi, who got two wickets in the first innings returned to the crease as the third batter in the second innings and combined well with Daniel Ajekun to put Nigeria close to half a century runs before the break.

Losing just three wickets with 74 runs after 13 overs, Nigeria dropped more wickets in quick succession as the battle went down the wire into the last over.

With one ball remaining, Nigeria was on 120 runs for the loss of seven wickets, and captain Sylvestre Okpe delivered a six on the last ball to take Nigeria to 126 and win the nervy clash by three wickets.

The Yellow Greens will hope to secure a place in the semi-finals with another spirited performance when they face table toppers Zimbabwe in their last group game on Wednesday.
