The Ikoyi Golf Club is set to welcome golf enthusiasts as it hosts the second edition of the South African Golf Tournament on Sunday, April 28th, 2024, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Organized by the South African Consulate General in Lagos in collaboration with Crossflex International, the event commemorates the 30th anniversary of freedom and democracy, as well as 30 years of unbroken diplomatic relations between South Africa and Nigeria.

Tolu Adesemowo, Managing Director of Crossflex and coordinator of the event revealed that over 100 players are expected to participate. This tournament marks the second edition after its successful debut last year as the South Africa Consul General Cup.

Adesemowo emphasized the positive impact of last year’s event saying, “Last year’s edition of the event, left an impression on the players; especially fun and the atmosphere it created among the diplomatic community.

“There was a compelling need for it to make a return for the freshness it brings to golf in Ikoyi and the diplomatic circle.”

The tournament will feature top amateur players, both male and female, competing under the Stableford scoring system at the Ikoyi Club 1938. The format includes a “short-gun” tee-off, where all players start simultaneously from each of the 18 holes to manage the large number of participants efficiently

Sponsored by Geregu Power PLC, Qshop, Pepsi, Acutech, Kaldi Africa, and Simplygolf apparel, the event promises an exciting 18-hole Stableford game with prizes up for grabs for both men and lady golfers.

Professor Bobby Moroe, the Consul General of South Africa in Lagos, expressed enthusiasm for partnering with Crossflex International Nigeria Limited.

“We are excited and proud to partner with Crossflex International, one of the reputable private golfing agencies in Nigeria. Sports diplomacy, in particular, golf, is a crescendo to harness partnerships and promote enduring relationships amongst the golfing community,” Moore
said.

The South African Golf Tournament forms part of the South African Week Celebrations in Nigeria and serves as a major highlight in commemorating the 30th year of independence for South Africa since the abolition of apartheid.

Additionally, auxiliary prizes such as longest drive, nearest to the pin, and 30th place finish will be awarded during the event, adding to the excitement of the day.
