AFCON victory to unite Cameroon

By Daily Sports on February 7, 2017

The past three weeks have been eventful, with the government lockdown on the English speaking part of Cameroon.
However, Cameroon captain Benjamin Moukandjo hopes that winning the 2017 AFCON trophy will bring the country together.

“Football brings people together. It helps us to celebrate a beautiful moment. Our country is facing a tough moment but we are just football players. The only thing we can do is bring joy to our people,” explained the contented Moukandjo.

Cameroon defeated two of the most successful teams in AFCON history to lift their fifth AFCON title, first surprising tournament favourites Senegal in the quarterfinal on penalties before defeating Ghana 2-1 in the semifinals and Egypt 2-1 in the final.

He further explained that, “The fans have been sharing this beautiful moment with us as we progressed through the tournament, even though they are far away in Cameroon.”

“We hope that these tensions will stop soon and this is the message to the people of my country so that tomorrow everyone can be settled.”

Cameroon won the AFCON title in 1984, 1988, 2000, 2002 and now in 2017 to become the second most successful African nation after Egypt, who have a record seven trophies.

The AFCON victory was Cameroon’s first against the Pharaohs after two failed attempts in 1986 and 2008. (© supersport.com)
