Governor Obaseki, Other Heavyweights Expected As Edo Sports Festival Begins Today

Benin City, the Edo State capital, comes alive today (Monday, February 10, 2010) as the 3rd Edo Sports Festival kicks off in the ancient city. The Games will begin once the Unity Torch lit by Governor Goodwin Obaseki on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 completes the tour of the state in Oredo Local Government Secretariat before noon.

According to the programme released by the organising committee headed by the Edo State Sports Commission Chairman, Barr Godwin Dudu-Orumen, the torch bearers will be at Egor Local Government Secretariat in Oselu by 10:00 a.m. on their return from Ovia North East and southwest LGAs and from there move to Oredo, the Host Local Government Council, to conclude the state wide-tour and subsequently herald the commencement of the fiesta at the University of Benin Sports Complex by 2:00 p.m. The Chief Organiser, Governor Obaseki, is expected to declare the games open.

The state Deputy Governor, Rt Hon Comrade Philip Shaibu, Commissioners, Sports Commission Dudu-Orumen, Directors of Sports, chairmen of the 18 local government councils of the state and athletes representing them are all expected to grace the occasion.

According to the programme of events, action will fully begin on Tuesday at designated centres, including Emotan College, Benin Golf Club in GRA, Etete Indoor Hall, UNIBEN Sports Complex and the main venue Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

According to the Sports Commission Chairman, the sports festival is being organised to harness budding talents and to fully put to test, sports facilities and as well to prepare the ground for the 2020 National Sports Festival to be staged in Benin, between March 22 and April 4, 2020.

The last Edo State Sports Festival was held in 2001, which paved the way for the hosting of the National Sports Festival the following year in Benin after the maiden one in 1981.
