Eagles drop to 42 in latest FIFA rankings

By Daily Sports Nigeria on December 1, 2023

Nigeria have dropped two places in the latest FIFA men’s rankings for the month of November.

The Super Eagles, who were ranked 40th in the world in the ranking released in October, dropped 16 points to 42nd.

The Eagles’ drop in the rankings was largely due to their poor start to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers earlier this month.

Jose Peseiro’s men began their World Cup qualification series with a 1-1 draw against Lesotho at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

They followed the result up with another underwhelming performance against Zimbabwe, playing another 1-1 draw in Rwanda.

The results mean the Eagles gathered just two points from a possible six and trail Rwanda and South Africa, who are first and second respectively in their Group C.

Nigeria’s disappointing displays during the World Cup qualifiers – their only games in the month under review –  have seen them drop two places in the FIFA rankings released on Thursday.

On the African continent, the three-time African champions remain sixth.

Morocco retained their number one spot on the continent and 13th in the world. They are followed by second-place Senegal, who also maintained their 20th place in the world.

Tunisia had a good outing in the month of November beating Sao Tome and Principe and Malawi in their two World Cup qualifiers.

The results have significantly moved them four places up in the world. While maintaining their third position in Africa, Tunisia, who were ranked 32nd in the World in October, are now placed 28th globally.

Algeria and Egypt also moved up two places to 3oth and 33rd position in the world respectively while completing the top five places in Africa.

Meanwhile, World Cup winners, Argentina, remain the number one ranked side despite losing a game to Uruguay in the qualifiers.

France are second, with England moving ahead of Belgium into third position while the Red Devils occupy the fourth position. Brazil suffered a defeat to Argentina and have dropped to fifth place in the world.
